so first of all - I’M PISSED OFF -it’s so perturbing when I come back to Texas and see countless trucks and SUVs with “my son is in the US army” on the side of their bumper. So I spent all of June building a large video sculpture installation piece for such hypocrites in their gas-guzzlers, only perpetuating our dependence on foreign oil. the words spoken by this dead soldier figure are from Conrad’s Heart of Darkness; this is re-edited to see the video as is, and at the end the sculpture in its space. What did you use for the blood on his face? If you used watered down oil, you’re my hero.

PERHAPS ONE SHOULD CONTEMPLATE THE BLUNDERS THAT WE (THE UNITED STATES) GET OURSELVES INTO, AND THEN, PERHAPS, REVERENCE WILL BESTOW UPON US.
If we lack the ability to ponder and understand then how will we ever stop the insanity?
to you and I it is obvious that big truck=lots of oil…but explain that to idiots and well perhaps its just too complex. It is much easier to remain ignorant than to sit–think and establish an understanding and a sense of respect.

This was a brilliant way of expressing the outrageous behavior on the part of some of our fellow citizens. Really nice piece, thank you.

It is actually developing economies who are most dependent on oil, so if the US fights for oil they are doing a great service to countries such as China, where coincidentally 1.3 billion people are joining modernity, buying cars and A/C units and driving to well-lit, cheap American style supermarkets. Big surprise, humans like the same kind of stuff, because their bodies and brains are identical in many respects.
The US could handle 150 dollar oil easily. In Europe taxes make gas thrice the American rate, cars are taxed 200% and people still drive to work in 3 hour traffic jams. Humans like mobility. And how much you wish for a sudden cheap oil free solution, it is not there yet and no amount of government subsidies or hoping will change that. Even 300 dollar oil would not make that feasible.
The US Military does more than fight for oil. It provides relief to disaster areas, safeguards the shipping lanes that make our lives possible, works as deterrent to any would-be world conquerer (The Germans twice last century, Stalin, China, not to mention certain Islamic radicals with their thoughts in brutal medieval fantasies all love to own the world. It will be much more unpleasant than gas guzzling “hypocrites” with sons in the army.
Individualism, personified in the American constitution and guarded by the Citizen soldiers of this land, is the only valid way of living, and it is incredibly successful in producing wealth and happiness. Your blog is an expression of this value, as is the Texan way of life you despise. Co-exist peacefully.
